Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome, commonly called as IBS is a hugely common condition mainly presenting as:

  • bloating
  • urgency to open bowels especially after meals
  • alternating diarrhoea and constipation
  • abdominal pains.

Contributing Factors

IBS is commoner in women as compared to men. Exact cause is unknown but irregular working hours (like shift work), stress, irregular eating, and certain types of food may trigger IBS symptoms.

Investigations & Treatment

Often investigations are required to rule out organic (non-functional) problems, and IBS is more or less a diagnosis of exclusion.  Treatment is aimed at achieving healthy lifestyle involving regular exercising, avoiding certain foods, reducing stress levels and some antispasmodics. Please click here to read more......
